Mercury in Cancer in the Seventh House

The placement of Mercury in Cancer indicates you have a need for those functions symbolized by Mercury to operate on the emotional level. Much of the behavior and many of the personality characteristics associated with Mercury in Cancer are a result of the basic emotionality of the mental functions. Mercury is generally challenged somewhat by its placement in Cancer. However, as symbolized by the natural sextile between Cancer and Mercury-ruled Virgo, there are very positive aspects of this placement that can be realized.

Cancer is the Cardinal Water sign. Most of the time, the active watery nature of Cancer symbolically drowns and dampens the changeable airy nature of Mercury, forcing the Mercury-associated functions to act through an unaccustomed element. This can produce a major amount of stress if the mental functions do not adapt to the emotional energy field represented by Cancer. However, if there is attunement, then the combination can become very powerful and positive, as you now have become “bi-lingual” as it were, able to unite and balance the Yin of the mental with the Yang of the emotional.

Having Mercury in Cancer, if you are insecure as a person, you are likely to feel unsure of your mental nature and, because of this, you reject the emotional attunement toward which your mental state leans. Your intellect feels overwhelmed with irrationality and you cannot deal with this. The ego subconsciously perceives its vulnerability in allowing the mind to function in a state in which the “irrational” (i.e., the ego’s perception of the unconscious Reality) may break through and threaten the integrity of the ego. Your response to this mental confusion is to withdraw mentally from active engagement. However, because you cannot escape the nature of your mental functions, you tend to communicate in an emotionally reactive manner whenever you are mentally confronted with “the irrational.”

Mercury in the 7th House:

The 7th House is generally a favorable placement for Mercury, since it tends to bring out the communication function represented by the planet. With Mercury in the 7th House, your relaties are more likely to be mental than emotionally based. Your mental energy tends to be directed externally, toward others, rather than introspectively. As an individual with Mercury in the 7th House, you are likely to enjoy the communication involved in relationships, especially when others respond favorably to your communications and to your mental energy. You may, therefore, be quite active in forming and carrying on relationships with a variety of people. You are likely to enjoy people due to the mental stimulation that they provide you.

Having Mercury in the 7th House, your thoughts may dwell on your actual or potential relationships with others. If you become too mentally involved, you may become overly analytical or critical of your relationships. You may also suffer from worry over your relationships.  With Mercury in the 7th House, you may also be vulnerable to your thoughts and perceptions being influenced by your relatie partner(s) or even by those with whom you come in contact. The thought of wanting to please other people may become too dominant, to the extent that you lose your independence of mind or say things you really don’t believe in because you want others to think well of you.

As an individual with Mercury in the 7th House, if you are inwardly insecure, you will be overly concerned with what others think of you. Your thoughts will dwell too much on the reactions that others have to you and you worry about this constantly. This may make you cautious or reluctant to communicate to others or you may say only what you think others want to hear. Because of your own insecurities about your self-worth, you may assume that others think ill of you. This may lead you to adopt a highly critical attitude towards others as a defense mechanism. In this, you are merely responding in-kind to the attitudes that you assume others express toward you. When your negative attitudes go beyond just thinking, you may become verbally abusive.

Intellect’s Focus

With Mercury in the 7th House, your intellect tends to be focused on others. You are likely to pay attention to what others think and the opinions that they express before forming your own opinions. You will also generally think about and analyze your relationships. This generally helps you to put your relationships in perspective, define yourself with respect to others and foster growth in your relationships. If you have an intellectual or academic interest in relationships, this may lead to a career in psychology or counseling.
