Mars in Scorpio in the Twelfth House

The placement of Mars in Scorpio indicates that you are likely to have desires that spring from a need for power or intimacy and that your actions are likely to be influenced by your intense emotional drives. This often manifests in your actions having an intensity that is the result of focused emotional energy. Others may, therefore, see you as powerful or aggressive. Much of the behavior and many of the personality characteristics associated with Mars in Scorpio are a result of your deep need for emotional security that is brought about through intimacy  or feeling that you are in control of your actions and desires.

Although Scorpio was formerly considered to be ruled by Mars, the Mars in Scorpio placement has its ambiguities. This is symbolized by the natural quincunx between Scorpio and Mars-ruled Aries. Scorpio is the Fixed Water sign. The active functions associated with Mars symbolically tap into the source of power inherent in Scorpio’s watery depths. The Mars-Scorpio relación may be likened to that of fire and water in a boiler. What is produced is high-pressured steam and energy. When there is a controlled and constructive outlet for this energy, it is a powerful source  of work. If the energy is blocked, suppressed and bottled up with no outlet, it becomes destructively explosive. Scorpio’s association with sexuality through the intense duality inherent in Pluto, its ruling planet, tends to heighten the sexual dimension associated with Mars.

Mars also symbolizes the animus in the psyche. Thus, if you are male with Mars in Scorpio, you are likely to model your masculinity in order to incorporate characteristics typically associated with Scorpio. As alluded to above, this often is associated with an identification of masculinity with sexuality and often, the Scorpio Mars male must struggle to rise above this tendency or to overcome or control intense sexual impulses. If you are female, you are likely to be attracted to someone who projects or embodies Scorpio-associated traits. This often manifests as an attraction to powerful, magnetic or sexually vibrant men.

Having Mars in Scorpio, because you are inwardly insecure, you are always seeking power in order to validate your selfhood and attain a feeling of security. If you attain power, you mistake the power that you feel as being personal and yours, rather than recognizing the truth that all power is from the One Source and is only lent to us for our use. Because you have a need to prove your superiority to yourself, you use this power to dominate others. Pure lust for power is a symptom of your inner feeling of powerlessness.  With Mars in Scorpio, you may also fear being controlled and so, in defense, seek to act to control others. On the other hand, if you are extremely insecure, you may shrink from asserting power either out of fear of the consequences should you misuse that power or out of fear that your use of power may prompt someone with greater power to exercise it against you.

Mars in the 12th House:

The Mars in the 12th House placement is most often seen as problematic or detrimental. This is especially true if you are male. This is because the active and assertive nature represented by Mars is opposite the passive and inward looking focus of the 12th House. The blending of the two energies must take place at a high level of consciousness and with care and discipline. In its more positive mode, this placement suggests a desire for hidden knowledge or for the dissolution or transcendence of the ego, with action taken to achieve these ends.

Mars in the 12th House also indicates that you may have an impulse toward compassion and sensitivity. This may shape your actions and desires in a spiritual direction, but it may also result in you holding back your assertiveness out  of regard for others. You may also be attracted to the subtler arts, particularly to music.

Dissolution and boundarilessness, which are associated with the 12th House may also produce negative tendencies without the discipline necessary to hold to a high spiritual path. Having Mars in the 12th House, deception, escapism and self-destruction may infuse your motivations and actions.

With Mars in the 12th House, if you are inwardly insecure, your attraction to the unknown and your sense of boundarilessness will make you fearful. Without boundaries, it is difficult for you to impose discipline on your actions and desires. You realize this and may be afraid to act. The “unknown” which frightens you are the Unconscious, which would swallow up and destroy your conscious ego.

Having Mars in the 12th House, one defense against your fears is to flee from those things that are symbolized by the 12th House and lead a very conventional life. In ignoring the unknown and failing to deal with it, however, you leave yourself open to its unwelcome intrusion in the form of unlooked for sorrows, illness, deceptions, etc. These are nothing more than calls from your subconscious for you to pay attention to your inner self.  Another type of defense against your fears is the opposite of the first. You define your desires and your actions within the purview of the 12th House. With Mars in the 12th House, you undertake roles and actions that are caricatures of the process of Unbecoming.  This is basically a self-destructive, as opposed to a self-transcending path. You can be consumed by addictive and destructive behaviors, such as substance abuse, pathological lying, dependency, etc. The self-destruction may be done openly, or it may remain hidden, with you leading a “double life” – hiding your actions and desires with deception.

It generally indicates that you do not have much attraction for material objects. Instead, you desire the universal. Mars in the 12th House may also signify desire for things that are hidden or forbidden. Your aims and motivations may be obscure, or your aims and desires may be deceptive.
